Barrio 2024

What is Barrio?

Barrio is a cherished tradition that the Filipino Cultural Association (FCA) at UMD proudly hosts to honor the Filipino American Studies program. This year, the theme, “Sa Kalsada ng UMCP” or “On the Streets of UMCP,” is inspired by the song “Saan” by Maki, which beautifully captures the sentiment that home is where the heart is. In Filipino culture, music is home, and this theme resonates deeply throughout the event.

Barrio is more than just a festival—it’s a vibrant celebration of Filipino culture where music, dance, and community come alive. This year’s festival will showcase the rich diversity of the Philippines through an array of traditional Filipino music, dances, and cultural activities. Music, an essential part of Filipino life, transcends linguistic barriers and connects people from different backgrounds and regions. Whether it’s the soulful melodies of a kundiman or the infectious beats of a contemporary pop anthem, Barrio reminds us that music is the universal language that unites us all, regardless of the dialect we speak or the paths we walk.
